Democratic leaders in the US Congress have sidetracked legislation to bail out the country's auto industry and demanded the Big Three American automakers develop a plan assuring the money would make them economically viable.
The Democratic speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, also a Democrat, said Congress would return to work in early December to vote on legislation if General Motors, Ford and Chrysler produce an acceptable plan that maps out a long-term strategy. The decision averted a likely defeat of legislation providing $25 billion loans for the industry.
