Global stock markets have tumbled following news of a sharp rise in jobless figures in the US and worldwide and deepened fears of recession.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged to to a new five year low, losing more than five percent at the close of trading in New York after a 427-point slide. The Nasdaq sank to its lowest close since 2003. London's FTSE 100 stock index fell more than 3 percent. In Frankfurt the DAX lost 3.08 percent to 4,220.20 and the CAC 40 in Paris was down 3.48 percent. Meanwhile weak demand has forced the price of oil to drop to a three-and-a-half low, selling briefly for under 50 dollars a barrel in London.
